IRVINE WELSH INTERVIEW

Tap To READ Train-spotting Novelist Exclusive: "I had read a lot of novels where people talked glibly about ‘capturing the energy of youth’ and I was invariably unimpressed. I would ask myself why such novels so often failed to do this, other than the most clichéd of ways (youthful, anti - establishment, ‘rebellious’ protagonists) and I always came up with the same conclusion: the tools, or the literary aesthetics weren’t present. The writer was essentially pitching to a notional reader who was white, male, old and upper-middle-class, namely a critic, rather than to the culture they were meant to be writing about."

TRISTAN EATON ART Review

Tap To READ: "Utilizing airbrush, silkscreen, hand painted and all manner of tools. Mr. Eaton has crafted, cobbled and cajoled a series of pre-existing images from a wide variety of sources, some familiar, others obscure. Like a giant bowl with hundreds of ancient matchbooks in a thrift shop somewhere along Route 66. Employing ephemera of multi-colored pamphlets, maps, newspaper cutouts and popular imagery across the American diaspora. The paintings vex a viewers visceral verisimilitude."

Mathilde Grafstrom Interview

JAMES DEAN: AMERICAN ACTOR

Tap To READ the Article by © J.A. Triliegi / images by ©Dennis Stock : "James Dean. He was not simply an actor in search of a project, he was a human in search of a world, a son in search of a father, an orphan in search of a mother, a new kid in search of a friend, a worker in search of wealth, a comedian in search of a tragedy, he was an outsider in search of the inside and when he got inside, he did what anybody with integrity and curiosity does, he searched for the exit and found it. But before that and most of all, James Byron Dean was an American in search of America."

Guillermo Cervera Entrevista

MARGIE LIVINGSTON Interview

Tap To READ the Exclusive: "Two things attracted me to modernism: the grid and a spirit of experimentation. Working with the grid connects me to many artists including Mondrian, Sol LeWitt, Eve Hesse, and Agnes Martin. But I’m also interested in a much earlier version of the grid: Renaissance perspective which, as Rosalind Krauss wrote, “is inscribed on the depicted world as the armature of its organization.” The entwined histories of the grid and painting inspired one of my new works, "

ON THE SET: RAGING BULL

Tap To Hear J.A. Triliegi On The Set with Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese: "A man in a hooded, leopard skin robe walks down a long hallway while a group of men push aside those standing in his path. We hear a crowd of thousands cheer the man on, "Jake Jake Jake …" they begin to chant. He is wearing boxing gloves, this is a championship fight, the crowd is dressed in their finest, the men are wearing suits and hats, the women are wearing jewelry, the place is filled with cigar and cigarette smoke, sailors, businessmen, middle aged characters scream the man's name over and over, the women smile as he passes by, his trainers walk in front of and behind the man as he walks down the pathway toward the ring, the volume of the crowd amplifies as the man gets closer and closer to the large roped off square canvas at the center of the arena. The man in the leopard skin robe enters through the ropes, a nondescript fellow with a microphone introduces the man in the robe, the crowd goes wild with frenzy, people are shouting, clapping, everyone is yelling something and then, suddenly, a quiet gent behind a camera yells, "cut" and the place goes silent, the action ceases, everyone settles and a pensive discussion between the crew behind the camera ensues."

JOAN SCHULZE ART STUDIO

Walter ROTHWELL Interview

Tap To READ UK Photographer Exclusive: "The actual process of taking photos breaks down into three categories for me. The first kind of pictures almost present themselves, everything just falls into place and with a rush like no other, the shutter can be released in the knowledge you have got something special, but they are few and far between! The more common and probably more valuable is prediction, learning how to read a situation so the camera is ready when the elements come together. The last and probably the one I use the least is waiting for the subject to come to you. "

ARTHUR MILLER at 100

Tap To READ: "Arthur Miller went toe to toe with mainstream ideology, with the dilemma's of war, with group thinking and paranoia, with religion, with celebrity machinery and even with the government of the United States of America during one of the worst chapters in our history: The McCarthy years. For those of you too young to remember or too old to want to remember. Senator Joe McCarthy led a witch hunt that was focused on left leaning individuals of all sorts, but specifically, those in the field of entertainment. Directors, writers, actors and producers were demanded to testify against their friends and associates publicly, privately, overtly or with discretion. Arthur Miller did no such thing, he refused to name names. He was found in contempt of court and later exonerated of all charges. "

F. SCOTT HESS : The Painter

GEORGIA O'KEEFFE ICON

Tap To HEAR: "Georgia O'Keeffe, as a person, was precocious, defiant, intelligent, unwavering and spirited. Throughout her education and early years as a painter, she produced an original abstractionist style that had preceded a group of New York painters of the male variety that has, to this day, remained wholly original, breathtakingly expansive and sexually charged in a way that empowers feminine energy and iconography. O'Keeffe rejected analysis of her works from start to finish, from her early years in New York, to her later years in The West, everyone seemed to get it wrong. So then, let us look again at the paintings and life of Ms. Georgia O'Keeffe and see if we can put this incredible body of work into a new and contemporary context with a fresh eye and revisionist look at this phenomenally bold American. "

Melissa Ann PINNEY Interview

Tap To READ Melissa Ann Pinney : "As a young girl, I remember feeling compelled to make something, to have a work that was my own. Painting seemed too grand and intimidating, sewing- too mundane and stereotypically feminine. It was not until college that I stumbled into photography and it felt like mine. I bought my first photography book there– the 1969 MOMA edition of The Americans, and later books of Dorothea Lange and Julia Margaret Cameron’s work. Peter Hales, the brilliant cultural historian and photographer, was my photography history professor at University of Illinois, Chicago, for my MFA. Peter had studied with Garry Winogrand. Winogrand also was a great influence on my work, along with Helen Levitt. "

David BURKE Interview

Tap To READ: "My process involves equal parts control and chaos, and echoes tenuous socio-ecological relationships depicted in the imagery. The use of synthetic material reinforces the commentary on man’s impulse to consume, contain and modify the earth’s resources in order to accommodate our own needs and desires. Contrary to some of the jaded ideas around the work, the paintings are actually quite optimistic in the sense that I am continually awestruck by the resilience of the natural world in the face of such heinous destruction."

ROBERT SHETTERLY Painter

Tap To READ: "At first glance, one notices the vibrant colors, the bold backgrounds and the striking faces staring directly at the viewer. Closer inspection reveals inscriptions and quotes scratched directly into the canvases. Looking closer yet, one begins to actually behold the energy, the spirit, the 'vibe', if you will, of the subject. Somewhere between the WORDS they have spoken and the faces they were given and often times, mingled with the historical aspects of American history: Robert Shetterly's subjects come to life."
